Largely inspired by the architecture of Vauban, the 27 holes at Dunkerque Grand Littoral, just 10 minutes from the town centre, are not only original in their geometric lines, but also in the way they were designed by the famous engineer beloved of Louis XIV. Spread out through the woods or on a high plateau that is more open to the wind, they offer a highly appreciable variety of play in a natural environment that is no less impressive.

The voluptuous curves of the greens, bumpy or winding fairways, draw or fade shots… Should golf always be perceived in curvaceous terms? It’s true that the Earth is as round as a certain little white ball, but isn’t a straight ball much more satisfying? We don’t know whether Vauban, who built Dunkirk into an impregnable citadel, played the game of Jeu du Mail (one of the forerunners of golf) with his august patron Louis XIV, even though he was a fervent fan. If he had been the architect of the course, we can imagine that he would have designed it with the necessary majesty, like an almost insurmountable fortified courtyard… You can’t change who you are!

Frenchman Robert Berthet didn’t go that far. His creation, which took more than twenty years to take shape, is a vibrant tribute to the famous engineer, conferring a singularity that is unique in the world. Fortunately, however, golfers do not have to pay the price, and the game is even better for it. At first glance, on the eighteen-hole course appropriately named the “Vauban Course” and given its frank and imposing design, inveterate golfers might find their biceps useful. But the presence of several bodies of water, more or less in play over 11 holes, requires the use of another muscle: the brain. And when approaching several of the greens, including the superb 4th in the shape of the ace of spades, a delicate swing is recommended…

Situated at a major European crossroads, the club regularly welcomes international guests, attracted by the friendliness of the staff and its regulars. Many of them are Belgian. It’s true that we’re just twenty kilometres from the Low Countries. The course is more undulating than normal: some of the links-style holes on a high plateau are even subject to the whims of the wind. Several “Vauban-style” elevated tees allow you to overlook, from a bird’s eye view, the grid-like layout of the course, with a number of architectural flourishes, including slopes, geometric mounds and planted walls that are a pleasant surprise for the discerning golfer.

The angular shapes are not necessarily a recurring feature, however: several holes that stretch through the woods have been softened and returned to a more traditional form. Water, on the other hand, is omnipresent on “Fort Vallières”, the 9-hole course opened in 2006. Flatter and more technical, with narrower fairways and greens, it offers several views over the surrounding countryside. With more traps, most of them water hazards, it is ideal for less experienced golfers, while offering an interesting challenge for more experienced players.
